Pocket Gardens of Portsmouth

The Pocket Garden Tour began in 1990 as a way for South Church to raise funds to improve and maintain the gardens surrounding our historic, 1837 granite building in downtown Portsmouth. Twenty-seven years later the Tour has grown into an important annual, regional event, treasured by the Seacoast community and garden enthusiasts throughout New England and beyond. The Tour has raised over $300,000 to benefit South Church and its humanitarian work in our community.

We are already in the planning stages of the 2018 tour. Next year’s tour will return to the historic South End, with all new gardens for your enjoyment. We’re calling this our “Water Views” tour, focusing on gardens in sight of the South Mill Pond and the Portsmouth Harbor. Visitors will be treated to a walk through historic places and spaces, under ancient, spreading trees, rambling stone walkways, and, of course, beautiful private gardens.

We’re still scouting gardens, and if you would like to offer yours, or give us a tip on a garden you admire, let us know. We are also seeking musicians and artists who would like to spend a few hours sharing their music or art with visitors.

We are also looking for new committee members. Quite a few of our members have worked on the Garden Tour for anywhere between and five and twenty-nine years, and they are looking for a change. We need new people with energy, ideas, ability to work with a team of people, and, of course, a love of gardens. Working on the committee is a great way to meet new people in the community and at South Church. Come join us!
